What is a Canada Visitor Visa?

The Canada Visitor Visa (TRV) is a document that allows a foreign national to visit Canada temporarily. It is issued by Canada Immigration Office and is valid for a maximum period of 6 months. It is essential to note that the purpose of the visit must be for Tourism, Business, Family or Friend visits.

Various factors influence the chances of getting approved for a Canada Visitor Visa. These factors include:

  • Criminal records;
  • Purpose of visit to Canada;
  • Family ties outside Canada;
  • Residency status in the country of residence;
  • Financial stability in the country of residence.


It is essential to understand that the Canada Immigration Office considers all these factors when evaluating your application for a Canada Visitor Visa.

Visitor Visa Eligibility:

The applicant must meet some basic requirements in order to apply for a Visitor Visa as follows:

  • The applicant has no health issues;
  • The applicant has a valid passport or travel document;
  • The applicant must apply from outside Canada for this type of visa;
  • The applicant must not have any criminal or immigration-related convictions;
  • The applicant must ensure and provides evidence that she/he has enough money to cover her/his stay in Canada;
  • The applicant may need to provide a Medical Exam and a Letter of Invitation from a Canadian resident to be considered for her/his Canada Visitor Visa application;
  • The applicant needs to provide the amount of money she/he will bring with her/his depending on the duration of her/his stay in Canada, whether or not she/he will be staying in a Hotel, a family or a relative’s place;
  • The applicant provides evidence to the Immigration Officer that she/he will leave Canada at the end of her/his visit, documents such as a return ticket, a letter from her/his employer, or proof of property ownership in her/his home country;
  • The applicant needs to provide evidence to the immigration officer that she/he has strong ties to her/his home country that will convince the Immigration Officer that she/he will return after her/his stay in Canada, such as a job, home title-deed, financial assets or immediate family.

Note:

Suppose the applicant meets all the eligibility above and submits all the supporting documents for Canada Visitor Visa. There is no guarantee that Canada Immigration Officer will approve the Visitor Visa application, and the total paid Immigration and Biometrics fees will be non-refundable.

Ineligibility:

Canada Visitor Visa applicant may not be allowed to enter Canada and can be inadmissible for several reasons, as follows:

  • Security risk;
  • Criminal activity;
  • Tax or financial fraud;
  • Human-rights violations;
  • Organized crime activity;
  • The health issue has high expenses or is a danger to Canadian society;
  • Entering the Canada border with children under 18 years old (minors) without providing evidence such as a children’s Passport, parent’s Passport, Birth certificate and a certified letter of authorization in English or French signed by both parents or their legal guardian.

Business Visit:

A Canada Visitor Visa applicant for Business Visit must participate in temporary international business activities without being part of the Canadian labour market to look for ways to grow and advance business relationships. Business visitors usually stay in Canada for a few days or weeks; however, they can stay in Canada for up to six months and must meet some basic requirements in order to apply for a Canada Visitor Visa for Business Visits.

Family and Friend Visits:

In order to visit Family or Friends in Canada, the Applicant must have a formal Letter of Invitation from them.

Returning Student/Worker:

Returning Students or Workers to Canada must have a valid Canada study or work permit.

Short-term Study:

The Applicant is able to study a program or course for less than six months in Canada. Study Permit is not required for courses less than six months.

Super Visa:

The Canada Super Visa is only for Parents or Grandparents of Canadian Permanent Residents or Citizens, and the Applicant must meet some basic requirements in order to apply for a Canada Super Visa as follows:

  • The applicant must apply from outside Canada for Canada Super Visa;
  • The applicant cannot include dependants in the Canada Super Visa application;
  • The applicant must take a medical exam by a Canada Immigration Panel Physician;
  • The applicant must provide financial support documents for the length of stay in Canada;
  • Immigration Officer will consider the overall political and economic stability of the applicant’s home country;
  • The applicant’s child or grandchild in Canada must prove that their household meets the minimum necessary income;
  • The applicant’s child or grandchild in Canada must provide paystubs and personal bank statements for the past six months;
  • The applicant’s child or grandchild in Canada must provide their CRA Notice of Assessment, T4 or T1, for the past two years;
  • The applicant’s child or grandchild in Canada must provide their employment letter, including job title, salary, job description, and date of hire;
  • The applicant must have Medical Insurance from a Canadian insurer valid for one year from the date of entry, at least CAD$ 100,000 for emergency coverage, and must be paid in full.

Tourism:

The Applicant is travelling exclusively for Tourism purposes.

Transit:

  • Thailand, Philippines, China, Indonesia, and Taiwan passport holders travelling from the United States of America may be able to Transit (48 hours or less) without a Canada visa;
  • Travellers with international flights stop at Canada airports on their way to another country, can transit through Canada in 48 hours or less and need to connect between 2 international flights at Canada airports.
